Akihiko Nakano is the group leader of the Live Cell Super-Resolution Imaging Research Team from the RIKEN Center for Advanced Photonics and Head of the Laboratory of Developmental Cell Biology from the University of Tokyo. He is Dr. in Science at the University of Tokyo and he was a postdoc in the lab of the Nobel prize-winner Randy Schekman at the University of California, Berkeley. He has been honored with important scientific awards. The main research theme of his laboratory is to understand mechanisms, dynamics and roles of membrane trafficking in eukaryotic cells. They have developed a high-speed and super-resolution confocal live imaging microscopy that has brought a new world of “live” imaging within a cell, reaching levels never seen before. They are also trying to extend this technology to medical and pharmacological applications.
