Resumen del proyecto:
Salmonella entericaare pathogenic bacteria that can cause gastroenteritis or systemic disease in humans and a great variety of animals. Salmonella and many other Gram negative pathogens use type III secretion systems in their interactions with the host. These are needle-like structures that secrete proteins, called effectors, into the eukaryotic cells. These effectors manipulate host signal transduction pathways in order to benefit the pathogen. The objectives of this project are the structural analysis of two Salmonella effectors, SlrP and SteA, the identification of eukaryotic proteins that act as targets for these effectors, and the functional and structural characterization of these interactions. To this aim we will take advantage of the previous work of the Spanish group with Salmonella and the analysis of protein-protein interactions, and the strong background of the French group in the study of cellular signalling at the molecular level, using X-ray crystallography combined with biochemical and other biophysical methods.
